Age of Aquarius

This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius — The 5th Dimension

Yes, it is a song... It also has specific meaning.

It is a specific epoch in time. Determining exactly what that time period is can lead to controversial conclusions.

I am not stating that this subject in and of itself is not controversial. What I am saying is that it is something identified and talked about, but rarely ever with a precise meaning. We should at least clarify what The Age of Aquarius or The Aquarian Epoch actually is before we start tossing around what is means, or whether or not we are even in it.

I am sure you have at least heard about the 12 zodiac designations. One of these is Aquarius, another is Pisces. What these represent spiritually or ritualistically is not the topic I am discussing here, I am trying to define a reference point for dealing with time.

Before going off on the pseudo-science/pseudo-archaeology rant that it means nothing, let me clarify that it does mean something, and that something is a reference to a period of time, nothing more, nothing less. To infer that since we are in a specific time period, certain events will take place is a completely different argument.

Now that I have established, that I am strictly defining a period of time, and assigning a name to it for reference, there should be no need for anti-scientific rants about what it is.

As our night moves through time and we can see the celestial bodies, we can notices that they move. The central plane in which this movement occurs is called the celestial equator. I don't believe that this is a subject for debate. We can also notice that certain celestial bodies don't moves as much in relation to some of the others, this is a scientifically proven fact. We can determine that the Sun, moves through a region in the sky with a defined northernmost point and a defined southernmost point. This is referred to as the Ecliptic. With this definition, we can cut the circle of the Ecliptic into 12 parts. Inside these 12 parts are collections of stars, the celestial bodies we determined don't move much in relation to some other bodies. Each of these regions is defined as a Constellation

The ecliptic currently passes through the following constellations:

  1. Pisces
  2. Aries
  3. Taurus
  4. Gemini
  5. Cancer
  6. Leo
  7. Virgo
  8. Libra
  9. Scorpius
  10. Ophiuchus
  11. Sagittarius
  12. Capricornus
  13. Aquarius

There are some other notable things to point out:

  • The Earth has a tilted axis of 23.44° which causes the movement of the stars through the Celestial Equator to be different from the movement of the sun through the Ecliptic.
  • The tilted axis of the earth rotates in an elliptical path commonly referred to as the Precession of the Equinoxes which takes approximately 26,000 years to complete
  • There are several other small variations of movement typically called nutations that make precession look wavy and not elliptical or circular. It also adjusts the time period to vary slightly from 25,800 years to 25,920 years.
  • The sun rises on the Spring Equinox in a particular constellation which changes over this precession. We commonly refer to these as "Epochs" or "Ages"
  • When the Sun starts rising on the Spring Equinox in the constellation of Aquarius, the is what they are referring to as the Age of Aquarius. This will continue for approximately 25,920/12, or 2160 years. Defining exactly when this starts is still a bit problematic and up for interpretation.

As you can see there is a huge disagreement on when in fact, this timeframe begins. If we look critically at these cross-references we can conclude it is either here, or about to be here. The IAU is so far off because of how they define the constellation boundaries and don't actually equate them to 12 equal boundaries in the Precession of the Equinoxes.

It is quite interesting that predominant religious dogmas follow what the common Zodiac has defined to symbolize these ages. If we are making a shift to a new predominant dogma; then I am sure there will be much upheaval from that which is being left behind, just as it has over all of the previous cycles.
